Orogbo. Àkụ ilu. Bitter kola.

Three names, one nut. In Yoruba it is orogbo — a word that carries the root gbó, meaning to grow old, to ripen, to mature. That is why elders press it into a newborn's hand at a naming ceremony and pray the child will age like the orogbo. In Igbo it is àkụ ilu, the bitter nut, set out for guests alongside kola. In English, they just call it bitter kola, which tells you almost nothing at all.

Whole, dried Garcinia kola nuts, sourced from West Africa and shipped across the United States. Firm shell, pale interior, and that unmistakable bitterness our grandfathers started their mornings with.

How to eat it properly

  1. Break off a small piece. A whole nut at once is a beginner's mistake.
  2. Chew it slowly. The bitterness is meant to be there. Let it sit.
  3. Drink cold water afterwards. The water turns sweet in your mouth. This is the part nobody warns you about, and it happens every single time.

Other ways it's used

  • Served to guests — set out in a bowl alongside kola nut and garden eggs when someone visits.
  • At ceremonies — naming ceremonies, new-year blessings, traditional marriages, wherever elders gather to pray for long life.
  • Steeped — cracked and simmered with prekese and uda for a warm, bracing infusion.
  • Ground — a small amount added to zobo or palm wine for depth and bite.
  • With honey — how most people introduce it to children and to first-timers.

Taste

Sharply bitter on first chew, drying on the tongue, then turning distinctly sweet on the finish and sweeter still with water. If you grew up with it, the taste is instantly your grandmother's parlour. If you didn't, give it three tries before you decide.

Storage

Keep in a sealed jar in a cool, dry place. Refrigerate to keep the nuts firm for longer. Best enjoyed within six months of opening.
